Poroshmoni 0.3 :: Firefox Extension

Hi, I’m back with this new extension ;) . We always want freedom. So today at Bijoy Dibosh, I’m giving you freedom for reading Prothom Alo. No more font dependency, just install this extension & read Prothom Alo in Unicode.

This is no more a site specific add-on. Now, It’ll convert the following sites to Unicode for you-

Actually it is an on-the-fly converter. It’ll convert the site just after loading.

If you can then please review my Extension in Mozilla Site. Any kind of comment or suggestion will be appreciable.

Thanks to Shabab Bhai (Shabab Mustafa aka Tarunno) for giving the name Poroshmoni & also hard working in bug testing plus bugging me(!!!) to complete this extension.

To Install-

  1. Go to the link below
  2. Register
  3. Then follow instructions there

Known Issues

  • In older versions of Firefox (Less then 2.0.*) some texts will be broken when converting prothom-alo.com. I’ve no plan to fix it ;) . If you want to use the old browser then use also older version of this add-on.

    Sorry for the late commend dude. Long ago Sajed bhai made the same and later he decided not to update in anymore. But when you come with the solution I think readers of those sites are again back on track.

    Rifat,
    I have one idea. You know lots of websites are using same font/encoding. For example Sutonny, right now this extension is only converting amadershomoy, ittefaq, bhorerkagoj, manabzamin, jaijaidin, which are based on Sutonny (may be I missed a few names). Now there could be an option for adding more sites, who are based on Sutonny. So for example if I go to xyz.com and see the text is wrong and also understand this is a sutonny based text, then I can add the site in the site list of the extension and enjoy the site. If that site is not sutonny based I can remove the site from Sutonny family and add it into another family to see if it works or not.

    I must mention that there is a huge demand for anandabazar.com readers. http://padma.mozdev.org/ has support for Anandabazar, but the support is faulty, it converts the text/rendering but it doesn’t change the encoding. Perhaps you can add that support too, so that lots of Indian people will find this useful.

    OK, At this moment I’ve no laptop or PC of my own :( . So, I can’t work on my personal projects. I’ll try to put Anandabazar support when I’ll start.

    Dear Rifat,
    Thank you very much for this outstanding plugin. It kind of saved me from hopping between workstations. On a separate matter, there is a problem which has been bugging us for a while. I am sure you are aware that most Bangla sites (even the Unicode ones) crash when opened on MAC. We have tried to open ours in OSX (browsers: FF3, Safari etc) and having the same problem. I was wondering if you have any thoughts on the matter.

    BTW, It’ll give you a .xpi file. Drop it over any open page in your ff browser, then you’ll get the install dialog box. After restarting the browser, check update for the extension & update it :P Then, again restart…

    Azad-bhaai, there is an extension called Padma that works with 3.5… It is not very good, in that it has a weird font and a problem with displaying antostha ya ( য় ), but it is functional for the time being… Besides, if you are on a PC platform, the IE Tab extension allows you to read all the Bangladeshi newspapers mentioned at the beginning of this page.

    Prothom Alo will release its new version (Unicode) in this week… That is why I’m not updating my extension…

    It is nice to know that PAlo convertering there site in Unicode. But man are they going to convert their archived editions in unicode? Please at least do update with prothom-alo.net.

    And poroshmoni is still very badly needed for the non-unicode sites. So, please don’t abort this project before adding the features we discussed earlier and you had worked on.

    Hi,

    Since Rifat isn’t updating it, I took the liberty of hacking it my self, and added new prothom alo and 3.5.* support. It works with all the sites mentioned above, even in windows 7. Thank you for giving this extension. I’ll appreciate, if you could just update the poroshmoni extension at firefox directory.

    Thanks for this awesome add-on!
    I took the liberty of tweaking your code a few days ago. (Added support for a few more Bangla sites, fixed prothom-alo & shomokal URL change)

    There’s a similar thread on amaderprojukti.com (Can’t find it now as the admins have disabled search functionality)
    So far I’ve tested it on FF 3.x, 3.5.x on Vista, Win7, Debian (+Ubuntu & Mint), Fedora, OpenSuSE & FreeBSD and the add-on works (almost) flawlessly (a few hiccups here and there notwithstanding)!

    Hi, Rifat. Back in May I asked you by email what encodings these sites use, and you answered “Some of those sites are with Sutonny encoding & some with Boishakhi encoding. They are being converted to Unicode by Poroshmoni.” Yesterday I looked at all the sites you listed, and as far as I can see all of them are in Sutonny encoding, except Prathom-Alo which is now in Unicode as you said above (http://www.vistaarc.com/downloads/poroshmoni#comment-937). (But I see an ad there right now which displays partly as nonsense because this piece — ˆfvU w`GqGQb 271 Rb — is Sutonny encoded.)

    Are you planning to keep it compatible with newer versions of Firefox?

    yes, you are right. Prothom-Alo has their Unicode site up and running but the link is not public yet. The site you visited is not Unicode. And may be some part of it remains Sutonny, due to improper conversion by Prothom Alo [Bijoy->Boishakhi]…

    Yes, I’ve just again stared working on it from yesterday…
