Anatomy of Font Fixer

I had released Font Fixer back in 21 February, 2007 and so far it is the most downloaded software of my blog. Now I will share how it works and how I found the way out. I hope you will enjoy it . That time latest Windows Operating System was Windows XP (Service Pack 2) and it was shifted with a default Bangla font named Vrinda, which was smaller and uglier than the recent version. And also Microsoft didn’t (still doesn’t) provide any way to change the default font. So, It was hard for general users to change the default font. Before Font Fixer a popular way was to use the hacked Vrinda (A font named Vrinda with SolaimanLipi glyph).

One day, I had got a document created in MacOS. When I opened it, I found that it was written using the Halvetica font. I didn’t have Halvetica installed in my PC but still I can still view and edit it. Though, it looked like Arial to me but Microsoft Word was displaying Halvetica as the font name. Then the word Font Substitution came into my mind. I googled it and bingo! I found this post by Michael Kaplan, a great guy .

Captcha Breaking Experiment in PHP

Few days back I saw a really nice post of Nadim Jahangir about breaking captcha [Breaking CAPTCHA: Getting Naughty With Computer Vision Based Human Interaction Simulator Bot]. After, reading his post, I’d decided to create something similar with PHP. And I’ve already done it. I also use somewhereindhaka.net captcha for my experiment but didn’t create any bot to post in their site .

Steps are very simple -

Create horizontal & vertical histogram of captcha using PHP GD.
Recognize each character by comparing values from histogram.
I didn’t use any Template Recognition Algorithm. Rather, I use simple Edit Distance Algorithm (Levenshtein Distance). And it works

Due to slow performence of BlueHost. Finally I’ve moved my server to HostGator. Hope It’ll work fine & I’ll be able to relase the dictionary bot by hosting the database in my own server.

I’ve just started making this theme. At first I had decided that it will be in white background but then I’ve changed my mind. Before that, I was using K2 Theme. K2 is still one of the top & most powerful theme for WordPress. But, As some of you know that, I’ve been working with web development. So, I’ve decided to make a theme for my blog.

And I’ve also decided to write some articles / tutorials for web development . Like, how to use some features of prototype js or jquery.

ভেবেছিলাম এই ছুটিতে আপনাদের বেশ কিছু টিপস্‌ বা সফট্‌ওয়্যার উপহার দিতে পারব। কিন্তু হায় বিধিবাম , ছুটিতে বাড়ি ফিরে, গত ৬ তারিখে বন্ধুদের অনুরোধে, প্রায় ৩ বছর পর ক্রিকেট খেলতে নেমে, হাতের আঙ্গুলের বারোটা বাজিয়ে ফেললাম। আঙ্গুলে ২ সেলাই এবং শূণ্য রানের বিনিময়ে আমার সেই দিনের ইনিংসের সমাপ্তি ঘটেছিল…
